Start With the Pool, Not the Calendar

Should an Above-Ground Pool Stay Up All Winter?

Most permanent, rigid-wall above-ground pools should remain assembled through winter. The safest approach to above-ground pool winterizing starts with the product’s design. Permanent pools are built to be winterized in place, with the water left at the level specified by the manufacturer or installer. Removing all the water or dismantling a permanent pool without approved instructions can place the wall, liner, frame, plumbing and connected deck at risk.

Many seasonal pools are different. Soft-sided pools, inflatable-ring pools and some portable frame models are intended for warm-season use only. Their manuals may direct owners to drain, clean, dry, fold or roll, and store the pool above freezing. A pool that looks portable is not automatically seasonal, so identify the model before choosing.

Eastern Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles, snow, wind and deep cold make the distinction especially important. The correct plan protects the pool without inventing steps that conflict with the product’s design.

Leave It Up or Store It?

Answer five questions to find the safest starting point for your pool. This educational guide cannot identify hidden damage or replace the instructions supplied with your exact model.

Your preliminary result

Confirm the Pool Type First

Your pool’s construction and manufacturer instructions determine whether it should stay assembled or be stored.

Why this is the starting point

  • A permanent pool and a seasonal pool require different winter plans.
  • The owner’s manual should settle the decision.

Your next steps

  1. Find the brand, model and owner’s manual.
  2. Inspect the wall, liner, frame, base and plumbing.
  3. Confirm the winter procedure before lowering the water.

Ask TN Pools About Your Pool

This tool provides general planning guidance. Follow the exact manufacturer, installer, equipment and chemical-product instructions for your pool. If the structure is damaged or unstable, keep people away and arrange a professional assessment.

Know Which Pool You Own

Permanent Versus Seasonal Above-Ground Pools

The words “above-ground pool” describe more than one type of structure. Compare the clues below, then verify the model rather than relying on appearance alone.

A

Permanent rigid-wall pool

Usually left assembled and winterized in place.

  • Steel, resin or hybrid wall and frame
  • Separate liner, skimmer and return fittings
  • Often installed on a prepared base
  • May connect to a deck or permanent equipment pad
  • Water level follows model-specific closing instructions
B

Seasonal or portable pool

Often drained, thoroughly dried and stored if the manual directs it.

  • Soft-sided, inflatable or portable frame design
  • Sold for seasonal assembly and disassembly
  • Smaller fittings and removable support pieces
  • Storage temperature and folding rules may apply
  • Must be completely dry before protected storage
Important: A portable-looking frame pool is not proof that it should be dismantled. Use the model number to locate its instructions. A permanent-looking installation does not override a manufacturer’s seasonal-storage direction.

Before Either Winter Path

Prepare Before the First Hard Freeze

For above-ground pool winterizing in Eastern Ontario, a good closing begins before the day the cover goes on or the frame comes apart. Choose a date that gives you enough time to solve water-balance, leak, equipment or parts problems before freezing weather. Booking professional service early also gives you a better chance of getting the timing you want.

1

Find the instructions

Locate the pool, pump, filter, heater, salt system and accessory manuals. Photograph model and serial numbers.

2

Inspect the structure

Look for wall movement, corrosion, frame damage, liner leaks, wet areas, base erosion and loose deck connections.

3

Test and balance water

Use a current water test and correct balance before closing. TN Pools offers in-store water testing; bring a fresh, well-labelled sample.

4

Clean the pool

Skim, brush and vacuum. Debris left over winter can stain surfaces and create a harder spring opening.

5

Gather compatible parts

Confirm plugs, cover, cable, winterizing accessories, storage bins and labelled pool-care products before starting.

6

Choose the correct water level

Lower water only to the level specified for your pool and cover. Never assume that “as low as possible” is safer.

Path A

For Permanent Pools

If the Pool Is Staying Assembled

With a permanent-pool approach to above-ground pool winterizing, the goal is to protect water, fittings, plumbing and equipment without removing the structural support the pool was designed to retain. Exact steps vary with the pool, filter, plumbing arrangement and cover, so use this sequence as a planning overview—not a substitute for the manuals.

  1. 01

    Balance and prepare the water

Test the water early enough to make corrections. Use only compatible winterizing products, follow label doses and never mix chemicals together.

  2. 02

    Clean before you close

Remove leaves, dirt and algae. Clean water is easier to manage at opening and reduces the chance of stains or a heavy spring cleanup.

  3. 03

    Remove seasonal accessories

Take out ladders, removable steps, solar blankets, cleaners, toys and other accessories as directed. Clean and dry them before storage.

  4. 04

    Set the approved water level

Follow your manufacturer or installer’s direction for the skimmer, return and cover. Do not completely drain a permanent pool simply because winter is coming.

  5. 05

    Protect lines and fittings

Remove fittings, drain or blow out plumbing, plug openings and use pool-grade antifreeze only where the instructions require it. Complex plumbing is a strong reason to use professional service.

  6. 06

    Winterize equipment

Drain and protect the pump, filter, heater, salt system and accessories exactly as their manuals direct. Store removable plugs and parts in a labelled container.

  7. 07

    Install the correct cover

Use a cover compatible with the pool and winter conditions. Secure it as designed without tying it to anything that could pull on the pool wall.

  8. 08

    Record and monitor

Take photos of the water level, fittings, equipment and cover. Check after wind, rain, snow or thaw events and address unusual water loss promptly.

Structural warning: Do not climb onto a frozen pool, walk on the cover, or strike the ice. Do not add hot water or improvise a thawing method. Keep children and pets away from the covered pool area.

Path B

For Seasonal Pools

If the Pool Is Being Dismantled and Stored

For a seasonal approach to above-ground pool winterizing, storage succeeds or fails on two details: following the disassembly method and eliminating trapped moisture. Water left in seams, folds, fittings or hoses can support mildew, freeze damage and unpleasant odours. Rushed folding can also create creases, pinches or abrasion.

  1. 01

    Choose a lawful drainage area

Follow the manual and current municipal rules. Direct water so it does not flood a neighbour, erode the pool base, enter a building or create an icy walkway.

  2. 02

    Clean while surfaces are accessible

Remove debris and residue with methods approved for the pool material. Avoid harsh household cleaners that could damage the liner or leave incompatible residues.

  3. 03

    Drain every component

Empty hoses, pump housings, filter parts and fittings. Follow the equipment instructions for cleaning media or cartridges and for indoor storage.

  4. 04

    Dry completely

Allow the liner, underside, seams, frame pieces, fittings and accessories to dry. Turn or reposition material so hidden surfaces are not packed damp.

  5. 05

    Inspect and organize

Check for pinholes, stress marks, cracked fittings or bent supports. Label parts by location and keep fasteners in sealed, labelled bags.

  6. 06

    Fold or roll as directed

Work on a clean surface and follow the manual’s temperature and folding guidance. Do not force cold, stiff material into a tight container.

  7. 07

    Choose protected storage

Use a clean, dry place within the temperature range specified by the manufacturer. Protect material from rodents, moisture, sharp objects and crushing weight.

  8. 08

    Document next spring’s setup

Save photos, labels, manuals and a parts list together. Note anything that should be replaced before reassembly.

Avoid Expensive Surprises

Common Above-Ground Pool Closing Mistakes

Open each card for the better approach.

“Every above-ground pool comes down for winter.”

Permanent rigid-wall pools are generally winterized while assembled. Confirm the exact model before draining or dismantling.

“A permanent pool should be completely empty.”

Not as a general winter rule. Use the manufacturer or installer’s specified water level so the structure and winter components work as designed.

“I can pack a seasonal liner if it feels mostly dry.”

Hidden moisture in seams or folds can cause mildew, odours and freeze-related damage. Dry every surface and component before packing.

“All antifreeze is suitable for pool plumbing.”

No. Use only pool-grade products where the pool or equipment instructions require them. Never substitute automotive antifreeze.

“More chemicals will keep the water cleaner.”

Overdosing can damage materials and create unsafe conditions. Base treatment on a current water test and the product label.

“Once the cover is on, I can ignore the pool.”

Check the cover, water level, wall and surrounding drainage after major weather and during thaws. Early attention can prevent a small issue from growing.

The checklist is a planning aid, not a universal closing procedure. Product labels and the manuals for your pool, pump, filter, heater, salt system, plumbing and cover control the actual steps.

After Closing Day

A Simple Winter Monitoring Routine

After the first freeze

Check fittings and cover tension

Confirm nothing has shifted, loosened or begun pulling on the wall. Look for unexpected water loss.

After major wind or snow

Inspect from the ground

Check the cover and surrounding area without climbing onto the pool. Follow the cover manufacturer’s snow and water-removal directions.

During a thaw

Watch drainage and the base

Make sure runoff is moving away from the pool rather than washing out the base or refreezing around equipment.

Before spring opening

Review your photos and parts

Arrange replacements or service before opening season becomes busy. Do not operate equipment until it is properly reassembled.

For an assembled pool, a sudden or ongoing water-level drop deserves attention. A covered pool can still develop a leak or plumbing issue, and delayed investigation may expose the liner or reduce structural support. If you are unsure what changed, request advice rather than adding water blindly.

Quick Answers for Search and Planning

Above-Ground Pool Winterizing FAQs

Can I leave an above-ground pool up all winter in Ontario?

Yes, when it is a permanent rigid-wall pool designed to be winterized while assembled. Follow its manufacturer and installer instructions for water level, fittings, equipment and cover. Seasonal or portable models may need to be dismantled and stored instead.

Should I drain my above-ground pool completely for winter?

Do not completely drain a permanent above-ground pool as a general winter step. Set the water only to the model-specific level. A seasonal pool may be fully drained for storage when its manual directs it.

When should I close an above-ground pool in Eastern Ontario?

Close early enough to finish every task before sustained freezing conditions, but not so early that warm water encourages algae. The right date varies with weather, water temperature, tree cover, equipment and service availability, so plan ahead and monitor conditions.

Can I store a seasonal pool in an unheated shed?

Only if the manufacturer allows the expected storage temperature and the shed stays dry and protects the material from rodents, sharp objects and crushing. Some pool materials and equipment require a different temperature range.

How dry does a seasonal pool need to be before storage?

Completely dry, including seams, folds, undersides, hoses and fittings. Trapped moisture can lead to mildew, odour and freeze damage. Do not rush the drying stage.

What should I do if the pool is leaking or the wall is leaning?

Keep people away and obtain professional guidance before changing the water level or dismantling the structure. Water and wall pressure interact, so an improvised response can make an unstable condition worse.

Do I need a professional to close my above-ground pool?

Some owners close straightforward systems themselves using the correct manuals and products. Professional service is valuable when the model is uncertain, plumbing is complex, a heater or salt system is present, the pool is damaged, or you want the work and preparation requirements clearly organized.

Where can I get my pool water tested before closing?

TN Pools offers in-store water testing and pool-care support. Bring a fresh sample in a clean container and identify the pool and sanitizer system. For the best usefulness, do not let the sample sit for an extended period before testing.
